A Beautiful Place

Director Atman Mehta

Set in Golovin, a small indigenous village in Alaska, the film traces residents’ lives amidst an increasingly severe climate crisis. Offering an observational yet expressionist portrait of community life, it depicts joys, adversities, and aspirations.

Deb, a schoolteacher, remembers how her mother always told her to live off the land and sea, a practice now difficult to realize. Isma, the village healer, worries about the feasibility of a plan to move the village further inland onto safer ground. And Charlie, the mayor, navigates a byzantine government bureaucracy to help his community prepare for the future. Regardless of such afflictions, they express why they love living in Golovin, alongside their hopes for the future.

Directors Bio

I am a first-time filmmaker, and earlier cut my documentary teeth in videographic journalism, having covered stories ranging from election day and food deserts to gun violence. I previously assisted popular Alaskan documentarian Ellen Frankenstein for over a year. My primary interests are in the climate crisis, and in media which helps build a more caring, self-aware world. At present, I am a doctoral student in economic history at the University of Chicago.
