DIRECTORS STATEMENT

This music video blends live action and vibrant animation to tackle the ongoing deportation of native workers and street vendors, or “immigrants”, as named by ICE and President Donald Trump. This fun, lively Mexican cumbia uses the power of music as a way to heal while also lyrically conveying the horrors of the real world. We wanted the music video to compliment these words by painting a whimsical and surreal portrait of what it feels like to come to this country situated on ancestral Indigenous land.

DIRECTORS BIO

Polaris Castillo is an Indigenous Mexican American filmmaker residing in Long Beach, CA. His work blends the complimentary energies between the spirit of the cosmos and the human spirit, taking inspiration from his Mesoamerican ancestry and utilizing illustration and filmmaking to preserve the sacred tradition of storytelling as a modern day tlacuilo, the Nahuatl translation for writer, artist, or scribe of the times. His portfolio highlights Indigenous tales, sexual diversity and uplifts BIPOC communities. He was born in East Los Angeles where his parents migrated to in the 1980’s from Mexico. His greatest honor is to embody the role of a storyteller, a passion passed down from his ancestors.

His work has been showcased at the Museum of Indigenous People (Arizona), ¡VIVA EL CINE! Film Festival (Buenos Aires, Argentina), San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, Root Division (San Francisco), Seattle Erotic Art Show, Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural (Sylmar), Espacio 1839 (East Los Angeles), Stay Gallery and more.
