This story is based on Cherokee History, Culture, Folklore and Medicine.
Stand Watie was a removed Cherokee, later Chief, who fought in the Trans-Mississippi theater of war (Indian Territory and surrounding areas) during the American civil war. He was the last confederate general in the field to surrender and the only Native American general officer of the civil war.
The ambush & looting of the steamship JR Williams was carried out by Watie and elements of the 1st and 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles on June 15, 1864. It is the only naval engagement of the civil war fought in Oklahoma.
During the war, Watie and his troopers participated in 27 major engagements.
2 films inspired the rest:
“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” by John Huston, 1948.
