DIRECTORS STATEMENT

My name is Miles Smith Jr. I’m from Dulce, New Mexico, and I’m Jicarilla Apache and Mescalero Apache. I’m a filmmaker currently studying Cinematic Arts & Technology at the Institute of American Indian Arts.

I make films that explore emotions and experiences I’ve felt, such as regret, grief, and emotional memories from the past, focusing on the unspoken burdens people carry. I like working through that by writing and directing stories that feel real to me. Most of my work deals with drama and reflection, using film as a medium to explore questions like ‘what if?’ or ‘what could’ve been different?’

I’ve directed student shorts, music videos, and worked as a cinematographer and camera op on different sets. Projects like Dragged to Nowhere and Forever After helped me find my voice, and showed me that even with limited gear and budget, you can still make something that hits emotionally.

I’m always learning—on set, in class, and just from life—and I hope to keep growing as a versatile filmmaker, while also exploring music and photography. But filmmaking is where I feel most present. That’s where I can take what I’ve lived through and turn it into something I can show others.
