Los Angeles PREMIERE
Hoʻolono (To Listen Deeply)
Director: Samantha Ramirez-Herrera
Hoʻolono, meaning “to listen deeply,” is a cinematic act of listening and an exploration of return, responsibility, and our evolving relationship to land and self.
Guided by Auliʻi Cravalho, the film unfolds over the course of a single day in Hawaiʻi, moving with the rhythm of ceremony rather than a traditional narrative. It begins at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, with Pele present and the earth in motion, where land is not backdrop but origin. From here, the journey opens.
As Auliʻi moves through Kaʻū and Kīholo, lands cared for and protected through ongoing conservation efforts, she spends time with cultural practitioners, stewards, and future elders, people whose lives are rooted in relationship with the land. Along the way, a quieter question begins to surface. What does it mean to return to a place that has always known you, even when you have been away?
Set against the reality of climate and biodiversity loss, Hoʻolono also traces something more intimate, a cultural crisis shaped by disconnection from land, language, and lineage. As ecosystems are pushed to their limits, so too is the knowledge that connects us to lands and waters.
Through intergenerational voices, chant, and moments of stillness, Hoʻolono becomes something you can feel. When nature speaks through plants, water, wind and fire, listening becomes an act of survival. Knowledge is not explained. It is carried, remembered, and lived.
As day turns to night, the film softens. Auliʻi reflects on what it means to come back, not just to a place, but to a way of being. How do we move forward without losing what has always been here?
Hoʻolono is an invitation to listen deeply, to remember that the path through ecological crisis may also be a path back to ourselves.
