DIRECTORS STATEMENT

The importance of what Inheritance explores cannot be overstated. While there are so many issues worth tackling regarding the effects of colonialism on Indigenous peoples around the world, it all really boils down to the loss of our land and our sovereignty. Everything else is a symptom of that. Land rights and sovereignty are at the core of EVERYTHING for Indigenous peoples.

As someone who is mixed Indigenous, this topic is incredibly close to my heart. Just like all Indigenous people in what is currently called Canada, my ancestors have their own story of stolen land. Not only were my people put on a reserve, losing our land to settlers, but our meagre amount of reserve land was also eventually stolen from us. I know how it feels not to have an ancestral and cultural home to call our own. Not having that connection to the land is like missing a part of my soul. And to not have the opportunity for generational wealth through land is ultimately at the core of Indigenous poverty and struggles with sovereignty.

Therefore, tension and suspense are a big part of this film, but so are a multitude of other feelings and emotions. From anger to joy to laughter, and as any good Indigenous person knows, comedy is a huge part of our cultures. This film has its share of levity.

So my hope is this film can be engaging, entertaining, and mind-changing, inspiring reconcili-Action. #Landback
