Director Statement

There are parts of us that form when we are little, parts that are light, and parts that are dark. In this film, the former is represented by The Fairy, and the latter is represented by The Shadow Monster. I ask you to ask yourself, should you reject your shadow? Can you even do that? Or must you accept it, let it be your friend?

I wrote INTO THE BOOK as an homage to my own childhood.  When I was a child, there was no place safer than retreating into my own mind. I used to hide into my closet where I had a bookshelf spilling over with books, and I’d lie on the floor amongst my clothes, and read. This film is what would have happened if I could truly travel into those other places, the places that were safer than reality.

Director Bio

Sarah Chang Tadayon, MFA, MBA, is a trilingual Chinese Iranian American filmmaker and actress with experience in Hollywood, Taiwan, and Iran.

She’s been featured in Deadline, Emmy Magazine, and contributed to StarTrek.com.  She’s a Television Academy Foundation alumna, and was a trophy presenter for the 74th Primetime Emmys as well as the 26th Television Academy Hall of Fame.

INTO THE BOOK marks her directorial debut and first auteur-driven film. From staying up all night making costumes, and turning her apartment into a magical portal using PVC and a lot of chiffon, to learning how to edit from watching Youtube videos, Sarah had a heavy hand in every aspect of the film.

Beyond filmmaking, Sarah’s advocated for ending gender apartheid in the Middle East as the emcee for a concert series for Let Her Sing® for the past three years. The concert invites women from regions where women’s voices are banned, and brings them to stages across California.
