Las Amazonas de Yaxunah

Director Alfonso Algara

In a small Mayan village in the heart of the Yucatán jungle in México, a group of women began playing baseball with a makeshift bat carved out of a tree branch, what ensued was fight against sexism that would change their lives. Playing barefoot and in traditional Mayan dresses due to lack of resources, Las Amazonas became a travelling softball team that both challenged cultural norms and brought a new generation closer to their Mayan traditions. The documentary captures their trips across Mexico and their continued fight for equality in their town.

Directors Statement

We followed Las Amazonas for a year and a half on throughout their travels, their games, and key moments within their community, including the ongoing conflict with certain men. But we knew that in order to achieve that, we had to make them feel comfortable around us. So, in the beginning, we took some time to live with them, share their everyday life, eat their food, sleep in their hammocks, and, in some way, enter their homes and become part of their family. It allowed us to see their vulnerability, their struggles, and their way of dealing with conflicts up close. That’s why it was always important to me that the crew was very personable and respectful, willing to experience those discomforts they were not accustomed to, and to live in that environment as one more member of the community. The interesting thing is that it changed all of our lives. They made us rediscover the world through their eyes.
