MBehcho - Home of The Dene Tha'

Director: JEREMY WILLIAMS

This documentary tells the story of the Dene Tha’s connection to Mbehcho (Bistcho Lake) along with their leadership and ongoing work to conserve and protect the area.

The film tells the story of Dene Tha’ First Nation’s deep connection to Mbehcho (Bistcho Lake) and the community’s steadfast efforts to protect their ancestral homelands. Nestled in Alberta’s boreal forest, Mbehcho is the third largest lake in Alberta, located in the northwest corner of the province. The region is home to iconic boreal species such as caribou and wolverine, and is an ancestral place to which Dene Tha’ people are deeply connected.

Through this film, the Dene Tha’ share their vision for the long-term stewardship of the Mbehcho region – one that safeguards cultural sites and practices, protects critical caribou habitat, and conserves areas of high biodiversity and soil carbon. This film offers a meaningful opportunity to learn about Indigenous-led conservation and the enduring relationship between people, land, and water.

Director Statement

Mbehcho – The home of the Dene Tha’ is a film 5 years in the making. The people and the place are magical. I’ve had the honour and pleasure of spending several weeks filming throughout the territory to film the elders.
