MISSION

Founded by Joanelle Romero in 1995 with the mission to break barriers of racism by creating systemic change through film television in all media in order to eliminate American Indian stereotypes. Our vision for the future of cinema and the arts is one in which Native Indigenous perspectives are authentically pictured, recognized, and valued in a way that promotes strong authentic Native identities, economic outcomes, equity, and wellness for our Indigenous communities.

The Native Indigenous Film Market is a pivotal space where films find their way into the global market, and partnerships are forged with a strong foundation of Native voices telling their own stories. It’s where distribution meets an emerging market new to the industry, paving the way for Native and Indigenous cinematic storytelling to become the norm on the silver screen.

Each November since launching the Native Indigenous Film Market (NIFM) in 2015 at AFM, we’ve pioneered initiatives like the world’s first Native Indigenous Film Commissions and Crew Directory. Now, NIFM is expanding its original vision as the world’s first Native Indigenous Film Market.  This expansion presents attendees with professionals, innovators, artists, and service providers from all fields of cinema production.

Our goal is to amplify the Native Indigenous Narrative by fostering collaboration, inspiring innovation, and cultivating partnerships that empower today’s and tomorrow’s filmmakers.
