Directors Bio

Nathaniel Fuentes – an indigenous filmmaker and storyteller from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico is a senior student in the Cinematic Arts and Technology BFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Drawing from a rich life experience of growing up in the inner-city of Los Angeles, California and the cultural wealth of living in Santa Clara Pueblo, Nathaniel molds his creative work with the perspectives, mythologies, and traditions of indigenous culture into engaging meaningful storytelling. One of Nathaniel’s strengths as a storyteller is relating shared human experiences by evoking relatable emotions.

Directors Statement

Being able to be inspired by other indigenous peoples, in a post-colonial world, is not so widespread. So, to be influenced and inspired by an indigenous artist who changed the way indigenous art is looked at and consumed while changing the norms of how indigenous art is promoted and made in a commercial market is revolutionary. In doing this, Lloyd “Kiva” New changed the small ranch town of Scottsdale, Arizona into a fashion and art hub for indigenous art and artists while transforming local businesses and its economy.

As indigenous fashion continues to demand the attention of the world stage Lloyd “Kiva” New’s influence along with his contributions in this setting, will not only become more of an interest as it is uncovered but will also become more important to indigenous and non-indigenous communities alike in the United States and Canada.

The documentary’s aim is to look into his life and investigate those influences and contributions by Lloyd “Kiva” New, with the introduction to audiences where some of the modern indigenous inspirations and art practices were developed, and came from that we recognize in today’s indigenous art and fashion world as well his contributions into national indigenous education reform while at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM.
