DIRECTORS STATEMENT

In thinking about what story I wanted to tell for my film debut in writing and directing, I thought of my grandmother. I wanted to tell a story that was authentically Native and true to our history while also showing our present. My grandmother was a strong, family-oriented woman who always knew what she wanted and sought to get it. She was fiercely supportive of my dreams, and brought a light to my life when reality sought to dim my own light.

In the original legend Raven Steals the Sun, the trickster Raven steals the sun, moon, and stars from an old man who is hoarding them, committing an act of theft that in turn brought us all into the light. In times of grief, it seems like it might be easier to turn away from the pain of losing someone. However, remembering the joy that your loved one gave you and sharing in that with others can be ultimately healing.

In our story, Grandfather wants to hold Grandmother’s spirit close, but in turn, denies everyone else the chance to feel her light. Raven is the granddaughter who sees how this affects both her little sister and cousin, and embarks on the difficult journey of confronting her grandfather and encouraging him to let Grandmother’s spirit free.

Pushing someone to face their grief and feelings can be messy, but if it is left to fester, everyone stays in that darkness forever. Raven represents those of us who choose to face that discomfort and pain for the greater good of ourselves and the people around us.
