Sally’s Bravery

Director: Nathalie Rankin, Roxanne Lauzin

In canoeing over 650 km with her children, Sally Diamond left a legacy of courage and strength that we honour in this documentary. Sally’s Bravery presents the life lived by the ancestors of most of the people who live in Pikogan, an Anicinape community in northern Quebec.

DIRECTORS BIO

Nathalie Rankin:
Nathalie Rankin is an Anicinape filmmaker from Pikogan and a teacher at the Migwan school in her community. Her creative practice is driven by a desire to preserve and share Indigenous history and memory.

Prompted by a question from one of her students about the place of their own history in school, she chose to put this transmission at the heart of both her teaching and filmmaking. Through film, Nathalie Rankin gives voice to the children of residential school survivors and to those whose voices have been marginalized for far too long.

Roxanne Lauzon:
Roxanne Lauzon, 44, is Algonquin (Anicinapekwe) who grew up in an urban setting far from her home community of Pikogan.

However, she has always stayed connected with her community and, over the years, has learned a great deal about its history and culture, which she practises as much as she can. It was in learning about her history and culture that the desire to highlight her ancestor Sally Diamond was born.

She works actively every day to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people closer and has a strong desire to give back to her nation. This film is another step in that direction.
