Directors Statement

Vess is a film of love, loss, and returning home and was inspired by the poignant strength and beauty I experienced in my own community when I moved back to my family’s territory at Six Nations of the Grand River a decade ago.

The film is about the powerful and simple ways that we as Indigenous people make family with each other; through sharing food, language, culture, philosophy, time, awkwardness, and even each other’s grief.

My approach to the narrative mirrors true life moments we have with each other as we witness relationships and identity unfold while the film leaves open the possibility for many outcomes for the audience.

I am thrilled to feature an all-Indigenous cast, most from my own community at Six Nations, as well as a real-life family who are Mohawk speakers depicting the young family returning home in the film. Important healing happens when Indigenous communities see themselves depicted on screen in these expansive ways.
