You're No Indian

Director: Ryan Flynn

“You’re No Indian” exposes the devastating impact of disenrollment through the real-life stories of those directly affected. The film sheds light on the cultural, social, and systemic consequences of this growing crisis, often fueled by corrupt tribal politics.

Disenrollment has stripped over 11,000 Indigenous people of their identities, rights, and access to their communities, with little recourse.

This isn’t just an Indigenous issue – it’s a human rights crisis that deserves attention.

Executive Producers Wes Studi and Tantoo Cardinal share the story of Tribal disenrollment, the process by which an individual loses their right to be a member of a federally recognized tribe, has devasted thousands of Native Americans.

The unjust ejection of legitimate tribal members is most prevalent amongst tribes operating casinos on their lands. The feature documentary “You’re No Indian,” produced with the deep collaboration and trust of our subjects, reveals the corruption and greed behind this shocking practice and its destructive impact on individuals, families and Indigenous communities in the United States.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

When I first learned about the injustice of tribal disenrollment, I was floored. Why was nobody making a documentary about this corrupt practice? In exploring the issue further, I discovered that for an Indigenous American filmmaker such a documentary could lead to immediate disenrollment from their tribe. With humility, I accepted the challenge and responsibility, over the past seven years, of facilitating this production.

Created in collaboration with Wes Studi, Tantoo Cardinal, other Indigenous producers (some of them anonymous) and cast, our film seeks to authentically amplify the voices and lived experiences of those who have been shamed and silenced. “You’re No Indian” was made as a platform from which to build solidarity and momentum in the fight against unjust tribal disenrollment. This film is not my film; it belongs to the individuals and communities whose resilience and bravery deserve to be recognized.
